The Microsoft Windows version of the game is a point-and-click adventure game, whereas the 6th generation consoles received a 3D platformer. The Game Boy Advance version received a 2D platformer. All versions of the game feature an original storyline, in which the player attempts to defend Bikini Bottom from an invasion of robots created by Plankton with a machine called the Duplicatotronplaying as SpongeBob in all versions, as well as Patrick and Sandy in the console versions.

The game's story begins with Spongebob and Patrick playing with robot action figures, and then the two both wish that they had real, life-size robots. After talking about it for a moment, Patrick heads home and Spongebob goes to bed, all the while thinking about how great it would be if their dream came true. However, unknown to them, Plankton had built the Duplicatotronwhich produces robots who are accidentally set to aboey no one, and who go on a rampage throughout the city.

A few days ago I addressed the goods and bads of licensed video games and realized one thing. The Nickelodeon licensed games from the early to mid 's were actually pretty good. The developers of these games were THQ, and they knew how to do these games right.
