With weekly and monthly events, there's always something or someone, if you get my drift to do. Want to keep in the know? Follow a party's profile page and we'll email you when the next one is announced!
And we were. I was arrested three times. To any LGBT American under 40, that could very well be life under a Stalinist client state, or a story set in some distant galaxy.
Last month, owner Lila Thirkield broke the news that the iconic lesbian bar would be shutting its doors for good inciting the lack of queer women left in the neighborhood as one of her reasons for the decision. As a bisexual person and longtime East Bay resident, most of the events on my weekend itinerary no longer require a trans-bay commute. The monthly party Ships in the Night, at which Sparro occasionally performs, posted a controversial open letter on its Facebook page last February asking straight allies to consider not attending the party and for white queers to be conscientious about taking up space onstage.
The White Horse bar is iconic. Possibly dating back to the s, this place is the oldest continuously operating gay-and-lesbian bar in the United States. Casual, unassuming, and diverse, the White Horse revels in its lack of trendiness.

Other large cities like Washington D. This was a time when city leaders across the country were cashing in on the idea of themed gayborhoods. Oakland needs something like this. For example, inChicago installed rainbow-colored pylons — funded with taxpayer dollars — along North Halsted Street, thus making Boystown the first officially designated gayborhood in the country.
It's about time! Oakland's openness and acceptance for free thought and lifestyles often blends various communities which is amazing. However, while there are certainly many amazing bars that cater to the gay community, they don't often feel as welcoming as they should.
