Leia captured by Jabba the Hutt in "Return of the Jedi. The "Star Wars" movies generally aren't very controversial, but there's one part of "Episode VI - Return of the Jedi" that still raises eyebrows. It's in regard to Princess Leia and the late Carrie Fisher, the actress who played her and who died last December.
It was one of the most highly anticipated items included in the event, which featured a number of high-profile pieces of movie memorabilia. The winner, who was not named, also received the collar, several chain links and a letter of authenticity provided by Industrial Light and Magic designer Richard Miller. Despite the sky-high price of the costume, it was not the most expensive item to sell.
In 's Return of the JediPrincess Leia, played by thenyear-old Carrie Fisher, is taken prisoner by Jabba the Hutt, made his slave and forced to wear a gold bikini. So when Rolling Stone ran an article on Fisher and the film, a beach was the obvious place to showcase both the cast and Fisher's interstellar swimwear we're guessing. And a beatbox.
This is not the first time I have made this costume. A long time ago I made a sad, sorry version out of a clothes hanger and model magic. It…it was…well…it was something from the dark side. I really wanted to revisit the outfit one day and do it proper justice.
Well, if things had gone according to plan, Han would be free and Princess Leia would be on her merry way. Instead, Princess Leia was revealed, and now she's Jabba the Hutt's slave. So that sucks.
The costume has gained a huge fan following since the release of Return of the Jedi. Hundreds of female fans wear home-made and store-bought versions of the costume at science fiction conventionsmany of whom post pictures of themselves on the popular fansiteLeia's Metal Bikini. The costume has also made several pop culture appearances outside of the Star Wars universe, such as when it was worn by Jennifer Aniston in the television sitcom Friendsby Yvonne Strahovski in the TV show Chuckand Kristen Bell in Fanboys.
Please refresh the page and retry. H owever there was a narrative behind that bikini which meant it was imbued with a more empowering message than some of those sultry film stills might suggest. And then I took it off.

The sequence with the giant bloated Jabba the Hut is a not-even-concealed Orientalist harem fantasy, complete with desert, chuckling dissipated bloated pasha and hapless princess decked out in fetishwear and chains. The dissonance is startling and stomach-churning. Obviously, a good part of the motivation for the slave Leia costume had to have been fan-service.
She originally "wanted 25 yards of fabric to be flowing through the scene", but couldn't make it work. The outfit was first developed in sketches by Rodis-Jamero, assistant art director of visual effects for The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi costume designer. The fact that [Leia's costume is] such a female sensual costume, I think is terrific.
