When Drop Dead Gorgeous was released init didn't quite fit in with the other teen movies that were major hits that year. It didn't have the Sixpence None The Richer-soundtracked revenge glow-up or transcendent hacky sack scene of She's All That ; the post- riot grrl feminism of 10 Things I Hate About You ; or the raunchy sexual exploration and I don't just mean the infamous pie scene of American Pie. Drop Dead Gorgeous was a whole other beast, using mockumentary-style filming to tell a bizarro tale of small-town pageant girls trying their best to not get killed by a crazed pageant mom.
Twenty-four years ago, in a small Minnesota town, a group of girls vowing for the title of Mount Rose Teen American Princess were under the spiteful eye of a sinister individual who would do anything to make sure that their chosen girl would win the pageant. These girls were not safe in their homes. They were not safe on stage.

Made for somewhere between ten and fifteen million dollars, it earned just ten and a half million in theatres. The movie is full of stereotypes, actively offensive toward nearly every American subgroup, and occasionally disgusting—at one point, pageant hopefuls, hanging over hotel balconies, vomit pink globs of shellfish en masse. But it has recently become available on YouTube for rental or purchase, and, on Friday, just ahead of its twentieth anniversary, it will come to a streaming network Hulu for the first time.

D rop Dead Gorgeous is one of my favourite films. Jesus loves winners, as Gladys Leeman tells her daughter Becky, but I do understand why Drop Dead Gorgeous was not triumphant when it was released 20 years ago. Shot as a mockumentary, and indebted to John Waters and Christopher Guest, it follows a group of young, wannabe high school beauty queens as they compete in the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Mount Rose American Teen Princess pageant. Kirsten Dunst is Amber Atkins, an earnest teenager who works at the morgue and lives in a trailer park with her mother — Ellen Barkin, joyfully soused — and good-time gal neighbour Loretta.
Even though Drop Dead Gorgeous has never been available for streaming, it remains one of the most underrated and beloved 90s films. In March, Hulu tweeted that it would arrive on the streaming platform April 1, but the tweet was later deleted. Like other cult favorites Heathers and Josie and the Pussycatsthe Michael Patrick Jann-directed film garnered a substantial fan-base for its dark comedy pageant plot, emerging at the height of Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, and Brittany Murphy's careers.
It started with her role as a guidance counselor turned erotic-lit writer in "10 Things I Hate About You" and ended with a small spot as Chris Cooper's withdrawn housewife in Best Picture winner "American Beauty. When "Drop Dead Gorgeous" opened on July 23,it was many things: a beauty-pageant satire, a dark teen mockumentary, an A-list ensemble and a gigantic flop. Today, it's nearly impossible to come by. Yet somehow "Drop Dead Gorgeous" maintains a permanent slot on any list of modern cult classics.
