By Lia Eustachewich. The Dutch teen who suffered severe anguish over a childhood rape and sexual assault starved herself to death — with the consent of her parents and doctors. It was reported, including in The Post on Wednesday, that she died from state-sanctioned euthanasia, but that is not the case.
By Natalie O'Neill. June 4, pm Updated June 5, am. Noa Pothoven, 17, who lived in the Netherlands, wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post about her heartbreaking decision to stop eating — leading to her death Sunday.
A year-old Dutch teen has reportedly died from starvation after a battle over whether she was legally eligible for an assisted death. Pothoven was sexually assaulted at age 11, then later raped by two men at the age of She had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, anorexia, and depression.

A Dutch teenager traumatised by a childhood rape died at home after refusing food and drink but was not euthanised, a minister and a clinic said on Wednesday, dismissing "incorrect" media reports. Noa Pothoven, 17, who became famous after writing a book about her long battle with anorexia, severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, died on Sunday.
Noa said she wanted her book to help vulnerable youngsters who struggle with life, saying that the Netherlands does not have specialised institutions or clinics where teens can go for psychological or physical aid. Noa Pothoven died in her home in Arnhem on Sunday, on a hospital bed set up in her living room. By Wednesday, the story was front-page news in Italy and was so dominating the internet conversation that the pope appeared to weigh in with a subtweet. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are a defeat for all. We are called never to abandon those who are suffering, never giving up but caring and loving to restore hope.
It's come to my attention that the extent to which physicians were involved with Noa Pothoven's death is now a matter of some dispute as reflected in the correction ran by The Washington Post and others. Every fiber of sensibility in humanity cries out for children like this. Hopefully she has found peace, but the precedent that descends upon society globally is even more alarming. Condoning euthanasia, even voluntary, is already a moral dilemma and ethical nightmare that very few are able to think through.
