The Journal of Military History, the quarterly journal of the Society for Military History, has published scholarly articles on the military history of all eras and geographical areas since The Journal is fully refereed. It publishes articles, book reviews, memoirs, research notes, documents of note, a list of recent articles dealing with military history published by other journals, an annual list of doctoral dissertations in military history, and an annual index.
Military history is a humanities discipline within the scope of general historical recording of armed conflict in the history of humanityand its impact on the societies, cultures and economies thereof, as well as the resulting changes to local and international relationships. Professional historians normally focus on military affairs that had a major impact on the societies involved as well as the aftermath of conflicts, while amateur historians and hobbyists often take a larger interest in the details of battles, equipment and uniforms in use. The essential subjects of military history study are the causes of war, the social and cultural foundations, military doctrine on each sidethe logistics, leadership, technology, strategyand tactics used, and how these changed over time.
Graff and David Curtis Wright, is a peer-reviewed semi-annual from Brill that will begin publication in It publishes both research articles and book reviews, aiming to fill the need for a journal devoted specifically to China's martial past. It takes the broadest possible view of military history, embracing both the study of battles and campaigns and the broader, social-history oriented approaches that have come to be known as "the new military history," and it covers all of the Chinese past, from prehistory through the pre-imperial and imperial periods down to the present day, aiming to publish a balanced mix of articles that represent a variety of different approaches and address both the modern and pre-modern periods of Chinese history.
From the modern perspective, both in the West and China, it often appears as if war had no place in Chinese history. It was therefore extremely consequential in many areas of history, influencing ideas, culture and even the arts. To further complicate matters, the study of Chinese military history has been subject to a number of Chinese and Western biases in the 20th and 21st centuries.
