Asian nationalist movement

In Asia, as elsewhere, nationalism has been used to mobilize support for the creation of new nation-states or the reinvigoration of existing ones. It has also been activated for such goals as national self-determination, social and economic development, the defense of territorial integrity or territorial expansion, and domination over other nations. Like other nationalisms, Asian nationalisms have deployed historical memories and myths, belief in a shared ethnicity, links to a territorial homeland, and shared cultural characteristics such as language, literature, religion, and customs to create a sense of common identity, purpose, and responsibility.

Indian nationalism with its specific features was the first nationalist movements to emerge in the colonies. Each chapter is devoted to the life story of one or two women, most of whom have been forgotten or undervalued, despite considerable contributions to their respective struggles.

Nationalism is an ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests. A nation is a group of people with a common language, history, culture, and usually geographic territory. A state is an association of people characterized by formal institutions of governmentincluding laws; permanent territorial boundaries; and sovereignty political independence.
